Biohazard Kits For Cleanups in the Workplace

Biological hazard (often shortened to the more familiar term ‘biohazard’) is the term used when referring to certain biological substances that can potentially pose a very real and significant threat to the health of many living organisms, although the term ‘biohazard’ is most commonly used when describing materials that are particularly harmful to humans.

These biologically hazardous materials can be anything ranging from medical waste, which can potentially have a detrimental impact on animal health as well as human well-being, microorganisms from a biological source as well as viruses and toxins. Such Biohazard materials are categorized into one of the four Biosafety Levels (BSL’s), laid down by the United States’ Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (as well as being graded P1-P4 – a shortened version of the term Pathogen/Protection Levels 1-4). In accordance with the standards of this system of grading, Level 1 is assigned to those biologically hazardous materials which pose only a minimal risk, most commonly used when grading viruses and bacteria such as chicken pox and canine hepatitis. Typically, there are fewer precautions taken against materials with a biohazard level 1, with the most commonly means of protection being gloves and face masks.

However, biologically hazardous materials given a grading of 4 is assigned to those which present the most harmful risk such as those bacteria and viruses (which can often cause severe and potentially fatal illnesses in humans such as Argentinean and Bolivian hemorrhagic fever). As would be expected, those substances given a biologically hazardous rating of level 4 require considerably more substantial precautions, such as the use of airlocks and even the use of a Hazmat suit with a self contained oxygen supply.

There are, on the other hand, far more subtle and (luckily for businesses) cost effective means of disposing of materials which could be potentially biologically hazardous. There are many online providers who sell a large selection of biohazard kits to the mass market. Such kits are suitable for a very large range of purposes including deodorising and containing spills of bodily fluids as well as providing materials for the disinfecting and cleaning of soiled areas. Apart from meeting all necessary health and safety specifications, biohazard kits contain almost everything that could possibly be required for these situations: latex gloves, fluid absorption granules, dry wipes and disinfectant spray. Such kits also sometimes contain a yellow biohazard bag (for use in more serious cases of biohazard waste disposal). If, over time some components of the biohazard kits become depleted, it is not necessary to purchase an entirely new kit as it is possible to purchase refills of certain supplies.

BS8599 and the Law

Providing BSi compliant First Aid Kits is the only safe way for an employer to meet new requirements.
HSE (Health and Safety Execuitive), as a member of BSi standard committee, have worked on developing of BS8599 but the HSE are non-prescriptive on the contents. It is the employers' responsibility to determine what is suitable. This, like all first aid provision, is based on the hazards in the workplace taking into account past injuries, number of employees etc.
However the HSE will not be making the new BS8599 First Aid Kit mandatory.

Why do we need the BS8599?

The BHTA guidelines, established in 1997 were in need of revision because the UK did not have a standard for First Aid Kits in the workplace until now. Training methods have changed and new products have arrived at affordable prices.

In the previous 10 person kit there were only one pair of gloves - yet 33 dressings. There were 4 triangular bandages - even though the training protocols no longer indicate their use for immobilisation of limb fractures.

Burns gel dressings are extensively used in first aid - now very available and affordable and included in the new kits. The BSi compliant First Aid Kits have good quantities of plasters, gloves and wipes, a common criticism of the old ones.

You may buy your BSi compliant First Aid Kits at http://www.hygienefirst.co.uk/

Our Services

Hygiene First Limited is a family business which was established in January 1995, and incorporated as a limited company in November 1997. As a supplier to the Food Processing industry in the UK the original core business consisted of a wide range of disposable protective clothing that is still imported from carefully inspected suppliers in the Far East. More recently the product range has been substantially extended to include first aid supplies janitorial products, PPE, safety footwear, and outdoor clothing. The Company is large enough to handle the most demanding of annual contracts, and yet small enough to care about the details that matter.

Many of our products tend to be undifferentiated in the market place, however by supplying quality products in a cost effective manner, the Company has been able to set itself apart from our competitors by consistently delivering exceptional customer service.

· Helpful text screen runs in tandem with the voice prompts
· Especially useful for audio challenged rescuers and in noisy environments
· Patented pre-connected non-polarized defibrillation pads (two year shelf life) simplify the pad placement process
· RHYTHMx™ technology - makes hard decisions fast
· The fully automatic version means shocks are delivered automatically (when appropriate) with no button to push or human intevention
· Seven year warranty on the AED – one of the longest warranties in the industry
· Four year full battery operational replacement guarantee
· Cardiac Science™ code: 9390A-502.

Through Hygiene First, all Cardiac Science’s AEDs are supplied with a Quick start kit: which includes a Quick start guide, CD-ROM with AED manual, training video, Rescuelink(R) and MDLink software and serial download cable.
Powerheart® AEDs use the same pads and batteries (with the exception of H00038 and H00039).

STAR® biphasic defibrillation energy waveform technology

* There are a number of ways an AED can deliver a defibrillation shock. Some AEDs provide the same level of energy each time a shock is delivered. Other AEDs deliver higher levels of energy with each shock, but still administer the same energy level for every patient. Cardiac Science believes no two patients are alike. That's why Cardiac Science introduced the proprietary STAR® biphasic defibrillation energy waveform, providing escalating biphasic energy and customised, variable energy
* .

Rescue Ready® technology

Cardiac Science’s Rescue Ready® technology distinguishes them from their competitors.

· Every day, to ensure anytime functionality, the AED self checks all main components (battery, hardware, software, and pads)
· Every week, the AED completes a partial charge of the high-voltage electronics
· Every month, the AED charges the high-voltage electronics to full energy.
If anything is amiss, the Rescue Ready® status indicator on the handle changes from green to red and the device will emit an audible alert to prompt the user to service the unit. In summary, a Powerheart AED is Rescue Ready® when a life depends on it.

RHYTHMx™ technology - makes hard decisions fast

The RHYTHMx™ technology offers the most advanced, smartest software analysis algorithm in the industry. The RHYTHMx™ technology is the intelligence behind the Cardiac Science's Powerheart hospital and public access defibrillation products, and is designed to continuously monitor, detect, and advise defibrillation therapy to treat cardiac arrhythmias.
· Specificity and sensitivity - clinical results with the RHYTHMx™ technology demonstrated 100% sensitivity (correct identification of shockable rhythms) and 99.4% specificity (correct identification of non-shockable rhythms)
· RHYTHMx™ technology differentiates between shockable life-threatening cardiac rhythms such as ventricular arrhythmias (VT/VF) and supraventricular tachyarrhythmia’s (SVT), plus distinguishes non-shockable cardiac arrhythmia events
· Non-committed device - if the RHYTHMx™ technology detects a shockable rhythm and charges, but recognises a rhythm change, the device automatically disarms, informs the user that that the rhythm has changed, and reanalyses the patient's heart rhythm
· Post-resuscitation monitoring - RHYTHMx™ technology continues to monitor the patient's heart rhythm post resuscitation, to instantly detect the reoccurrence of a life-threatening arrhythmia. If cardiac arrest recurs, the device will charge automatically and advise the operator to deliver a defibrillation shock
· Synchronised shock - RHYTHMx™ technology automatically synchronises shock delivery whenever possible to the patient's electrocardiogram R-wave. If unable to synchronise it will deliver an unsynchronised shock.

· Synchronisation of a defibrillation shock has been shown to be more effective in converting patients out of life threatening arrhythmias
· RHYTHMx™ technology that allows a medical director or physician to pre-program detection rates for shockable cardiac arrhythmias such as VF, VT and SVT
· Non-committed shock, pacemaker detection, and synchronised shock features

The Importance of Biohazard Kits in the Workplace

It almost sounds like something out of a science fiction movie but the reality is that biohazard kits should be in place where you work just like a mandatory first aid kit. And hopefully you'll never have to use biohazard kits but just in case, you should know exactly the proper procedures in their application and most importantly how to protect yourself.

One of the most common biohazard kits is what is called the single application kit. Just as the name states, it's used once and then properly disposed of. These single application kits are designed for only one purpose, and that is to safely remove and then disinfect any area that becomes contaminated with a persons bodily fluids. Ok, here comes the queasy part. Bodily fluids meaning blood, vomit and urine. Now if you're reading this with just a bit of the feeling that it can never happen around you, let's take a look at a scenario and maybe you'll think a bit differently.

You're at work and the person next to you complains of illness. All of a sudden they stand and start leaving but never make it, instead they pass out, fall and hit their head and start bleeding. You now have a biological hazard in your presence. In many large organizations there are people who have the responsibility of dealing with such hazards. But that may not be the case in a lot of smaller businesses. Hopefully you have been trained in the use of the biohazard kits. After securing the area and getting this person medical attention, it's now time to use the kit for what it was intended for.

All kits contain an impervious apron, put it on. Also don the mask and the gloves that are furnished in the kit. Remember, you are protecting yourself first and foremost. Each kit will also contain a quantity of super absorbent granules. Apply these first. Then use the supplied scraper and scooper to collect and put in the supplied biohazard disposal bag. All biohazard kits will also contain a quantity of disinfectant spray to spray the area that you just cleaned. When finished, remove your apron, your mask and lastly your gloves and place all these items in the disposal bag and secure it with the tie that is provided in the kit. Voila, you just dealt with your first biological hazard that could occur in your workplace.

Granted, that really is an oversimplification but hopefully you have a better understanding of why having biohazard kits in the workplace is an absolute must.

Why Should We Have First Aid Kits and First Aid Supplies

Every household and workplace needs a first aid kit in case of emergency, just as everywhere needs a fire extinguisher. They are essential in situations in which calling an ambulance may take time and someone needs help immediately, or in less urgent situations such as a child falling over and needing a plaster and some antiseptic to clean the wound. A standard first aid kit for a household should include an emergency first aid guidance leaflet, around twenty plasters of different shapes and sizes, two eye pads, four triangular bandages, six safety pins, six medium dressings, two large dressings, six alcohol free cleansing wipes and one pair of disposable gloves. This tends to be the standard watermark of what is needed and the minimum most suppliers offer in a box. However, there are extras available from most suppliers at an extra cost. For example, when ordering a first aid kit one can request for it to include various bandages such as cohesive, conforming, crepe, elastic, tubular or WOW bandages. In addition, there are still more products available such as ambulance dressings, antiseptic, blankets, hot and cold sprays, thermometers, cotton wool and cream for insect bites.
First aid kit suppliers specialise in the supplying diagnostic and first aid equipment to individuals and private companies. They offer online services which customers can use to browse the wide range of products varying from first aid kits, to resuscitation masks and blood pressure monitors. With first aid kits being so universally essential, the supplier’s clientele ranges vastly from normal members of the public, to health organisations, Schools, Care Homes, as well as Surgeries of course. Orders can be placed online and then be conveniently delivered within a few days in the UK.

First aid kits/supplies

As is often shown in the news, personal hygiene is a really important part of daily life be it from washing both your hands after using the lavatory or coming into contact with raw meat or poultry always be sure that cuts are cleaned, and properly dressed so as to prevent infection. One way to be sure that the latter is definitely possible in almost any eventuality is to keep a completely stocked emergency first aid kit which can be easily accessed when needed.

There is a wide selection of first aid kits available on the open market, from your small basic one person sets available from most hiking shops and pharmacists to the St John’s Ambulance selection with enough supplies to meet the requirements of 10, 20 and even 50 people that comply with all of the most up to date health and safety regulations. However, because possessing a poorly stocked emergency first aid kit can be ultimately as bad as not having one at all, it is vital to replace any stock that has been used. This is why, it is possible to buy refill packs that include all of the necessary items such as plasters, dressings of varied lengths and sizes, disinfectant wipes, bandages, eyepads, safety pins and latex gloves. If however, one particular item becomes necessary, it is possible to get a range of them individually without the need to splash out on a complete refill set.

However, some businesses might require hygiene and health and safety goods that may not be typically a part of first aid kits, such as eyewash stations and first aid signs. In such cases there are numerous online suppliers who are able to provide such items among others allowing these firms to stick to health and safety guidelines.

It should be noted, however, that these suppliers do not only supply to businesses since they in addition provide first aid kits and some other items specifically for sports teams including additional items that include cold/hot packs plus emergency foil blankets.

BS-8599 Choosing the right British Standard Kit

BS-8599 British Standard First Aid Kits

Choosing the correct kit for your organisation
Employers are required to make a risk assessment to decide what the hazards are and how many employees are involved in the areas to be covered. This does not have to be an onerous task and may be as simple as checking through the accident record book to determine the types and numbers of injuries that have occurred in the recent past.
The table below is a useful guide to match risk assessment and appropriate kit size.
